Non-Life Insurance Claims Largely Unsettled

In 2025, Bangladesh’s non-life insurance sector disbursed 1,242 crore taka in claims, leaving a striking 3,599 crore taka unresolved. This indicates that only 8.56% of claims were settled, while 91.44% remain pending, underscoring a significant challenge in claims management within the sector.

The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) released this information through its four quarterly reports, compiled from data provided by 46 licensed non-life insurance companies nationwide.

During January–December 2025, insurers received new claims totaling 1,740 crore 37 lakh taka. When combined with 3,055 crore 80 lakh taka of pending claims from December 2024, the total claim burden for the year amounted to 4,795 crore 17 lakh taka.

From this, companies settled 1,242 crore 25 lakh taka, giving an average settlement rate of 8.56%. The quarterly performance varied considerably, reflecting both seasonal claim patterns and operational delays.

Q2 (Apr–Jun)392.56300.018.32

Q4 (Oct–Dec)608.91372.199.37

The first quarter of 2025 saw the highest settlement rate at 90%, largely attributable to the clearance of older pending claims. The following quarters reported markedly lower rates: 8.32% in Q2, 7.55% in Q3, and 9.37% in Q4, highlighting a slow pace of claim resolution during the year.

IDRA emphasised that the large volume of unresolved claims, amounting to 3,599 crore taka by year-end, remains a serious concern for policyholders. The regulator has called on insurance companies to enhance operational efficiency, accelerate claim processing, and maintain transparency to restore confidence among policyholders.

The persistent backlog of claims underscores the critical need for systemic reforms in the non-life insurance sector to ensure timely compensation and strengthen the overall stability of the industry.
