North Korea Conducts Another Ballistic Missile Test

Amid ongoing discussions between Washington and Seoul regarding a potential recalibration of their defence posture in response to Pyongyang’s provocations, North Korea on Tuesday launched multiple ballistic missiles into the sea, South Korea and Japan have reported. Preliminary assessments suggest that the missiles were short-range.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired from a location near the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, at approximately 3:50 p.m. local time, travelling towards the waters off the country’s eastern coast. The projectiles reportedly covered a distance of roughly 350 kilometres.

Separately, the Japanese Coast Guard confirmed that it had detected several missiles believed to have been launched by North Korea, which fell into the sea a few minutes after launch. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reassured the public that the missiles posed no threat to Japanese territory. Japanese authorities reported that the projectiles reached a maximum altitude of approximately 80 kilometres.

South Korea’s National Security Office immediately called on North Korea to cease all ballistic missile launches, condemning the act as provocative and a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions. Japan issued a statement asserting, “Repeated ballistic missile launches by North Korea threaten the peace and security of our country, the region, and the international community.”

The Japanese statement further emphasised that such launches constitute a serious breach of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and endanger public safety. Japan lodged a formal protest and expressed strong condemnation of Pyongyang’s actions.

In recent months, North Korea has conducted a series of tests involving short-range missiles and multiple rocket launchers, which the regime claims are critical components of its strategic nuclear arsenal designed to deter perceived threats from the United States and South Korea.

The situation has attracted heightened international scrutiny following a 2024 mutual defence agreement with Moscow, under which Pyongyang supplied short-range ballistic missiles and artillery to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine.

The latest missile tests occurred while a senior US defence official is visiting South Korea to discuss modernisation of the military alliance, as Washington seeks to play a comparatively limited role in joint defence operations against North Korea. Analysts warn that these launches may signal Pyongyang’s intent to test regional responses and reinforce its negotiating leverage in international security discussions.
