On Sunday morning, residents of Thakurgaon district experienced a light tremor, prompting minor concern among locals. According to the Seismology Monitoring Centre of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the epicentre was identified near the Atghoria area in Haripur Upazila. The seismic event was recorded at 8:34 a.m. local time.
Rubayet Kabir, an official at the Seismology Monitoring Centre, reported that the tremor registered a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale, classifying it as “light.” The shaking was brief and, although perceptible in some areas, did not cause panic or alarm among the population. No casualties or physical damage have been reported.
Local authorities confirmed that while the tremor was felt across various parts of the district, it resulted in no significant disruptions. Electricity, telecommunications, and road networks remained fully operational. Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are prepared to respond immediately if required.
Geologists note that northern and north-eastern regions of Bangladesh are seismically active, with occasional light tremors being relatively common. While such events are generally harmless, they reflect ongoing tectonic activity beneath the Earth’s surface. Experts emphasise the importance of regular monitoring and public awareness to mitigate potential risks in the future.
This incident follows a series of seismic events in the country last year. In November and December 2025, multiple tremors were felt in Dhaka and surrounding regions. Notably, on 21 November, four tremors occurred within 31 hours, causing considerable disruption. The first, recorded in Madhabdi, Narsingdi, measured 5.7 on the Richter scale and resulted in 10 fatalities and over 600 injuries.
Seismologists underline that lessons from recent tremors should guide future building practices. The implementation of earthquake-resistant construction methods and improved disaster preparedness can significantly reduce potential damage.
The table below summarises recent notable seismic events in Bangladesh:
| Date | Location | Magnitude (Richter) | Epicentre | Casualties/Damage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 Jan 2026 | Thakurgaon | 3.4 | Haripur, Atghoria | None |
| 21 Nov 2025 | Dhaka & surrounding areas | 5.7 | Madhabdi, Narsingdi | 10 dead, 600+ injured |
| Nov–Dec 2025 | Dhaka region | Multiple | Various | Minor damage |
The administration has confirmed that earthquake monitoring and public awareness initiatives will continue, ensuring that residents can respond swiftly and safely to any future seismic events.
