Obaidul Quader’s condition deteriorates, on life support in Kolkata

Following the mass uprising in Bangladesh in July 2024, the prominent political leader and General Secretary of the Awami League, Obaidul Quader, fled to India. His health has now reached a critical stage. Having long suffered from age-related ailments, multiple chronic conditions, and general physical frailty, Quader had been largely bedridden for an extended period. Until recently, he was receiving oxygen support at his residence in New Town, Kolkata. However, on 2 January 2026, his health deteriorated sharply and unexpectedly.

Reliable sources report that he was found in a near-unconscious state and was immediately admitted to Apollo Hospital, located along the bypass in Kolkata. Upon arrival, he was placed on mechanical ventilation. Hospital physicians have indicated that while he is showing some response to treatment, his overall condition remains extremely precarious. Medical teams are continuously monitoring him and administering comprehensive care.

In a June 2024 interview, Quader disclosed that following the July uprising, he had gone into hiding, frequently changing residences for three months and distancing himself from active politics. Ultimately, he left Bangladesh for India in November 2024.
