One Sailor Killed as Ukrainian Strike Hits Iranian Vessel in Caspian

An Iranian commercial vessel operating in the Caspian Sea has been struck by Ukrainian military forces in an unprecedented long-range operation, leaving one sailor dead and another injured.

The attack occurred on Saturday morning, triggering intense diplomatic fallout and sharp condemnation from Tehran, which described the incident as an unprovoked violation of its national sovereignty and maritime safety.

Kyiv Claims Operation Against Military Supply Lines

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the operation via a statement on social platform X, disclosing that Kyiv’s security forces deployed long-range drones and missiles against specific naval vessels navigating the Caspian Sea. According to President Zelenskyy, the targeted transport assets were linked directly or indirectly to Iranian military logistics. However, the Ukrainian leader did not explicitly name the specific Iranian commercial ship cited by Tehran.

Expanding on the operational details, Ukraine’s principal intelligence agency, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), issued a separate statement on Telegram. The SBU asserted that drone strikes were carried out against commercial vessels currently operating under international financial and diplomatic sanctions. Ukrainian intelligence claimed these merchant ships have long been used as cover to covertly transport weaponry, military drones, and strategic supplies between Iran and the Russian Federation.

Tehran Denies Arms Transfers and Summons Ukrainian Envoy

Iranian state news agency IRNA, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that a sudden explosion rocked the Iranian-flagged merchant ship early on Saturday morning. Subsequent maritime investigations confirmed that the blast resulted from a targeted Ukrainian military strike, which claimed the life of one crew member and injured another.

Tehran categorically rejected Ukraine’s assertions regarding arms shipments, reiterating that Iran maintains a neutral stance and has never intervened directly or indirectly on behalf of any belligerent in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Characterising the strike as a hostile and criminal act, the Iranian Foreign Ministry initiated swift diplomatic countermeasures. Officials summoned Ukraine’s Chargé d’Affaires in Tehran to deliver a formal protest note condemning the armed assault in the strongest terms.

In an official statement published on Telegram, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called upon the United Nations Security Council, the European Union, and the wider international community to issue an immediate and resolute response to the maritime strike, warning that Kyiv’s hostile actions would face an appropriate and decisive reaction.
