A Dhaka court has granted a three-day police remand for Beauty Akhtar, who was arrested over the fatal stabbing of her romantic partner, a second-class official of Bangladesh Railway, in the capital’s Mohakhali area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana issued the remand order on Sunday following a petition submitted by the investigating officer. Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain of the court’s prosecution department confirmed the judicial decision.
The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Tareq Hasan of Banani Police Station, originally submitted a 10-day remand prayer on 14th July to interrogate the accused in police custody. The magistrate had set Sunday for the hearing and ordered the authorities to produce Beauty Akhtar in court.
During the hearing, state prosecutors argued strongly in favour of placing the suspect on remand to uncover the full circumstances behind the homicide. No defence lawyer appeared in court on behalf of the accused. Upon hearing arguments from the prosecution, the magistrate approved a three-day questioning period.
According to the case documents, the victim, Mamun Miah, worked as a second-class officer in Bangladesh Railway. Investigators revealed that Mamun had recently met Beauty Akhtar, and the two subsequently developed a romantic relationship.
The situation took a tragic turn on 10th July when Beauty arrived in Dhaka under the pretext of seeking medical treatment and rented a room in the TB Gate area of Mohakhali. On the following day, 11th July, she summoned Mamun to the rental property and allegedly pressured him to marry her.
A heated altercation ensued when Mamun resisted the marriage demand. In the midst of the violent dispute, Beauty allegedly drew a sharp knife and stabbed Mamun in the lower abdomen and groin, inflicting severe internal injuries.
Local residents and bystanders rushed to the scene after hearing the commotion, rescuing the critically injured railway official and transporting him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Despite emergency medical intervention, Mamun succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at the facility.
Following his death, the victim’s uncle, Md. Shamsher Ali, filed a formal murder case against Beauty Akhtar at Banani Police Station. Police subsequently arrested the suspect and launched a detailed investigation to trace the sequence of events leading to the fatal assault.
