A local political official affiliated with the main opposition party has been arrested by law enforcement officers in the Gaibandha district while operating an illicit narcotics transaction. The suspect, identified as Firoz Kabir, was caught in possession of contraband items during a targeted raid. Senior police officials have confirmed that the individual in question possesses a prior criminal record, which includes at least two separate active indictments relating to drug trafficking offences within the region.
The law enforcement operation was executed on Tuesday evening, 19 May, at approximately 09:00 pm. A specialised deployment team from the Phulchhari Police Station successfully neutralised and detained the suspect in the Gunbhari locality, which falls under the administrative jurisdiction of the Phulchhari Upazila.
The formal details of the successful operational interception and the subsequent detention were verified to national media outlets by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Phulchhari Police Station, Durul Hoda. From an administrative and organisational perspective, the detained individual has been identified as the General Secretary of the Ward 4 unit within the Uriya Union branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Details of the Tactical Police Operation
According to corroborative statements provided by both local community sources and senior police investigators, the tactical unit initiated the raid following the receipt of precise, actionable intelligence derived from confidential informants. The intelligence brief indicated that an illegal transaction involving prohibited synthetic substances was actively scheduled to take place within the Gunbhari sector on Tuesday night.
Upon arriving at the designated coordinates, the undercover and uniformed officers intercepted Firoz Kabir precisely as he was attempting to complete the retail sale of narcotics to an associate. The suspect was immediately subdued, searched, and taken into formal police custody. Subsequent intelligence debriefings with local residents indicated that the politician had covertly engaged in the systematic distribution and commercial sale of illegal substances across various sectors of the Upazila over an extended period, utilising his political standing within the Uriya Union to deflect local administrative suspicion.
Seizure Metrics and Imminent Judicial Proceedings
During the formal processing of the suspect at the scene, law enforcement personnel conducted an itemised search of his person. Officer-in-Charge Durul Hoda confirmed that the search resulted in the recovery and physical seizure of nine individual psychotropic pink tablets, commercially known across South Asia as “Yaba”—a highly addictive composite drug consisting primarily of methamphetamine and caffeine.
Following the field seizure, the contraband items were formally catalogued into the police evidence registry to serve as primary material exhibits for the prosecution. The suspect was subsequently transferred to the secure holding cells of the Phulchhari Police Station for administrative processing.
OC Durul Hoda further clarified that Firoz Kabir is currently undergoing mandatory preliminary interrogation by the station’s detective branch to ascertain the identity of his primary wholesale suppliers and broader distribution network operating within Gaibandha. The police administration confirmed that two separate, pre-existing criminal cases involving illegal narcotics distribution remain pending against the suspect in the local courts.
A comprehensive criminal charge sheet is being compiled by investigators under the statutory provisions of the Narcotics Control Act. Law enforcement authorities have finalised the necessary administrative paperwork to ensure the suspect is formally transferred to the district judicial custody facility and presented before the relevant magistrate’s court tomorrow morning to face formal arraignment.
