Jennifer Lawrence Chooses Silence Over Politics

Last September, at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence openly commented on the political climate in the United States and expressed solidarity with Palestinians. However, during the promotion of her new film “Die My Love”, she appeared on The Interview podcast by The New York Times and revealed that she no longer wishes to speak about politics.

During Donald Trump’s first term, Lawrence was one of his fiercest critics. In a post-election article, she wrote that only white men felt safe in the United States as their rights were prioritised. When asked about her current views on Trump and politics, Lawrence replied that she no longer knows whether she should say anything at all. She now believes that celebrities’ political opinions do not influence elections and often fuel unnecessary controversy.

Lawrence said she is undergoing a phase of personal reassessment. As an artist, she does not want her political stance to affect how people perceive her work. She wishes audiences to lose themselves in her stories, not in political debate. If her comments worsen tensions rather than calm them, she prefers to remain silent.

She added that she has seen many celebrities’ careers harmed by political expression, which has made her more cautious. Lawrence said she now expresses her beliefs mainly through her work. Her production company has backed Bread and Roses, a film about three Afghan women, and a documentary addressing anti-abortion laws.

When asked whether she regrets her previous remarks, Lawrence laughed and admitted she probably regrets almost everything she has said. Regarding Trump’s second term, she noted that the situation is different this time because Americans already knew what he was capable of—and yet chose him again.

Her latest film “Die My Love” was released last Friday.
