Over 47,000 Expatriates in Chattogram Register for Postal Voting

Interest among Bangladeshi expatriates from Chattogram in exercising their democratic rights through postal ballots has risen markedly ahead of the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Election and Referendum. According to the latest figures released by the Election Commission (EC), a total of 47,347 expatriate voters from Chattogram’s 16 parliamentary constituencies have completed registration to vote by post.

As of 1:00 pm on Sunday, 21 December, expatriates residing across various countries registered via the Election Commission’s dedicated mobile application, ‘Postal Vote BD’, confirmed EC officials. Of the total registrants, 44,786 are male voters, while 2,560 are female voters, reflecting a notable gender disparity that election analysts believe warrants further outreach efforts.

Following scrutiny and verification, the Election Commission has already approved 38,769 applications, while 8,578 registrations remain under review. Officials stated that verification is progressing steadily and assured that all remaining applications with accurate documentation and valid information will be approved in due course.

Election Commission sources emphasised that the introduction of postal voting represents a significant step towards ensuring inclusive democratic participation for Bangladeshis living abroad. Many expatriates, who have long been unable to take part in national elections due to geographical constraints, have welcomed this initiative as a long-awaited opportunity to remain connected to the country’s political process.

Constituency-wise Trends :

EC statistics reveal that Chattogram-15 (Satkania–Lohagara) has recorded the highest number of postal voters, with 8,080 registered expatriates, including 7,936 men and 144 women. This is followed by Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari) with 4,090 registrations, and Chattogram-5 (Hathazari and part of the city) ranking third with 3,503 registered voters.

Other constituencies such as Mirsharai, Banshkhali, Rangunia, Khulshi–Halishahar, Chandgaon–Boalkhali, Sandwip, and Sitakunda have also reported strong registration figures, indicating widespread enthusiasm among expatriates across the district. In contrast, Chattogram-13 (Karnaphuli–Anwara) recorded the lowest number of postal voters, with 1,267 registrations.

Registration Deadline and Requirements :

Under Election Commission guidelines, expatriate voters may continue to register via the ‘Postal Vote BD’ app until 25 December. To be eligible, voters must use an active mobile number from the country in which they intend to cast their vote. Registration requires downloading the app from either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, followed by uploading necessary personal details and supporting documents.

EC officials believe this initiative will play a crucial role in strengthening democratic participation and ensuring that the voices of expatriate citizens are heard in national decision-making.
