As Bangladesh prepares for the 13th National Parliamentary Election and a simultaneous referendum on 12 February, female voters are poised to reach a historic milestone in electoral participation. According to the latest update from the Election Commission (EC), the country now has a total of 127,711,793 registered voters, of which 62,885,200 are women. Male voters number 64,825,361, highlighting a nearly equal gender distribution among the electorate.
In a landmark development, this election will also formally recognise the voting rights of the third gender, commonly referred to as hijras. For the first time on such a large scale, 1,232 hijra voters will exercise their franchise, marking a significant step towards an inclusive electoral system that reflects Bangladesh’s diverse society.
Analysing the voter distribution across constituencies, Gazipur-2 emerges as the largest electoral area, boasting 804,333 registered voters, while Jhalokathi-1 is the smallest, with 228,431 voters. The Election Commission has emphasised that special arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety and smooth voting experience for women at every polling station. This includes dedicated women’s booths staffed with adequate female polling officers and security personnel to facilitate a secure and dignified voting environment.
Across the nation, over 42,000 polling stations will open on 12 February, welcoming voters from early morning. On the same day, citizens will cast their ballots not only for parliamentary representatives but also on crucial national issues in the referendum. The Election Commission expressed confidence that the enthusiastic participation of young and female voters will help deliver a festive, orderly, and peaceful election. Administrative and technical preparations have already been completed to guarantee a transparent and impartial voting process.
