Tragedy struck Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday afternoon when a young motorcyclist lost his life after colliding with a passenger bus. The accident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway, near the Chogirshah Katta area of Malumghat.
The deceased has been identified as Shafiul Alam, aged 26, a resident of Ward 8, Namaar Chiringa, Chakaria Municipality. He was the son of Selim Uddin. Shafiul had recently returned to Bangladesh last month after working in the United Arab Emirates.
According to local sources and the highway police, Shafiul was travelling from Chakaria town towards Cox’s Bazar on his motorcycle when the tragic collision occurred with a northbound Hanif Transport bus. The impact was fatal, and Shafiul was pronounced dead at the scene. His motorcycle was completely destroyed in the crash.
Speaking to Prothom Alo, Officer-in-Charge of Malumghat Highway Police Station, Md. Mehedi Hasan, confirmed:
“The body has been recovered and taken to the police station for custody. Both the bus and the motorcycle involved in the accident have been seized. Unfortunately, the bus driver and his assistant fled the scene. We will consult with the victim’s family to determine the next legal steps.”
Local residents noted that this stretch of the highway is particularly prone to accidents, often due to reckless driving, poor road conditions, and risky overtaking. Authorities are urged to enhance safety measures and raise awareness among road users to prevent such incidents in the future.
