Paan Trader Murder Shocks Chauddagram

A paan trader was brutally killed in Chauddagram upazila of Cumilla district after being attacked with sharp weapons by unidentified assailants late on Tuesday night (5 May), triggering widespread shock in the locality.

The deceased, 38-year-old Md Anwar Hossain Nayan, was a resident of South Betiara village and the son of the late Abdul Hai. He had long been engaged in running a paan shop at Gangra Road’s Head area and was known locally as a hardworking small businessman. His death was confirmed on Wednesday (6 May) afternoon by Chauddagram Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Md Arif Hossain.

According to family members and local sources, Nayan closed his shop at around 11:15 pm and was returning home when he was ambushed by a group of unidentified attackers lying in wait. The assailants reportedly struck him repeatedly with sharp-edged weapons, leaving him critically injured on the roadside.

Relatives have alleged that around one lakh taka in cash, which he was carrying from his shop, was taken during the attack. Hearing his cries for help, nearby residents rushed to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee.

Locals immediately rescued the injured man and took him to Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was later referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he died on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment.

He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters. His death has cast a deep shadow of grief over his family and the wider community.

The victim’s nephew, Md Jewel, stated that his uncle was attacked while returning home after closing his shop as usual. His wife, Taslima Akter, said she last spoke to him in the morning before the incident and described the tragedy as devastating for the family.

Meanwhile, relatives have alleged that a long-standing land-related dispute with a neighbouring individual had previously led to threats against the victim. They suspect that the conflict may have played a role in the killing, although no official confirmation has been made.

Officer-in-Charge Md Arif Hossain said police responded immediately after being informed and visited the scene. He added that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved. However, no formal case had been filed at the time of reporting.

The incident has raised concerns over local security, with residents demanding swift arrests and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
