The recently unveiled Pakistan squad for the upcoming T20 International series against Sri Lanka has sparked intense debate among cricket enthusiasts and analysts alike. The “Men in Green” are set to embark on their tour of the island nation without the backbone of their lineup: Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, and Haris Rauf. This decision to omit the nation’s premier cricketers from a vital preparatory window has cast a shadow over the team’s strategic roadmap leading into the T20 World Cup.
The series, consisting of three matches, is scheduled to run from 7th January to 11th January. With Pakistan’s World Cup opener against the Netherlands looming on 10th February, the Sri Lankan tour was widely expected to be the final laboratory for testing tactical combinations. Instead, the absence of these four titans has left the PCB facing scrutiny over the balance between national duty and the escalating influence of global franchise leagues.
The Big Bash Conflict
The root of this mass absence lies in the Australian Big Bash League (BBL). Following a period of administrative uncertainty regarding No Objection Certificates (NOCs), the PCB gave the green light in October for its star players to join the Australian circuit. Since the BBL season spans from mid-December through to 25th January, the quartet is contractually bound to their Australian franchises, making them unavailable for the duration of the Sri Lankan assignment.
Interestingly, the PCB has applied different criteria to players in other leagues. For instance, Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah, and Hassan Nawaz were permitted to participate in the ILT20 only because that competition concludes on 4th January, allowing them sufficient time to rejoin the national squad. Meanwhile, Shadab Khan remains the only high-profile BBL participant to be recalled, primarily to facilitate his reintegration into the side following a recent injury layoff.
Player Logistics and Availability Matrix
| Category | Key Players | Current Commitment |
| BBL Stalwarts | Babar, Shaheen, Rizwan, Rauf | Unavailable (BBL ends 25 Jan) |
| ILT20 Returning | Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah | Available (League ends 4 Jan) |
| Fitness Return | Shadab Khan | Included (Injury recovery priority) |
| World Cup Start | National Squad | 10th February (vs Netherlands) |
The PCB’s gamble appears to rest on the assumption that playing high-intensity cricket in Australia will keep the stars in peak form. A subsequent T20 series against Australia in late January is touted as the “true” dress rehearsal where the full-strength squad will finally reunite. However, whether this fragmented approach will lead to a cohesive unit by the time the World Cup begins remains a significant concern for the Pakistani faithful.
