A tragic incident in Phulpur Upazila of Mymensingh District has triggered widespread concern and public anger after a seventh-grade schoolgirl was allegedly subjected to sexual violence and later died following a suspected suicide attempt by ingesting poison.
The incident occurred in Baroshunoi village under Baitkandi Union, where local residents and the victim’s family have accused a man named Rubel Mia, a resident of the same village and father of two children, of committing the offence. Since the allegations emerged, the accused has reportedly gone into hiding, and law enforcement agencies have been conducting repeated operations in multiple locations in an effort to apprehend him. However, he has not yet been arrested.
According to the victim’s family, the girl left her home on Monday, 30 March, when she was allegedly intercepted and threatened. The family claims that she was forcibly assaulted, after which she returned home in a distressed condition and disclosed the incident to relatives. The victim’s account, as reported by her family, described significant fear and coercion during the alleged episode.
Following the incident, the girl reportedly suffered severe psychological distress. Family members stated that she confided in her grandmother, expressing that she no longer wished to live. Shortly afterwards, she attempted to take her own life by ingesting pesticide. She was initially taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, she died during treatment on Sunday night, 29 March.
In response to the death, the family filed a murder case at Phulpur Police Station. They have also alleged that certain influential individuals in the locality are attempting to suppress the case, further intensifying tensions within the community.
Police officials have confirmed that efforts are ongoing to arrest the accused. Multiple teams, alongside other law enforcement agencies, are actively working to locate him. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains a priority and that legal action will follow once the suspect is detained.
The incident has sparked anger and grief among local residents, many of whom have demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and exemplary punishment through due legal process.
