Pirojpur Businessman Attacked Over Extortion Demand

A shocking act of violence in Pirojpur Sadar has left five people injured after a businessman’s refusal to pay an extortion demand sparked an armed attack at his home. The incident underscores the persistent threats faced by local entrepreneurs and the ongoing challenges of law enforcement in tackling organised intimidation.

The attack took place on Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:00 pm at the residence of Golam Rasul, 57, in the Cholisha area of Tuna Union. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of assailants, armed with sharp weapons, forcibly entered the house after Rasul repeatedly declined to pay a longstanding bribe. During the assault, the attackers also stole gold jewellery belonging to the family.

Those injured in the attack included Hanif Sheikh, Nargis Begum, Hamida Begum, and Rina Begum, alongside Golam Rasul. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with the attackers striking indiscriminately and showing no regard for the victims’ safety.

Rasul told police that the main perpetrators were Alamgir Sheikh (42) and Sojib Sheikh (32), who had demanded 5 lakh taka in extortion over an extended period. After being refused, the duo, accompanied by 3–4 accomplices, carried out the violent assault. During the attack, Rasul sustained a severe injury to his left thumb while attempting to block a machete blow. Family members who tried to intervene were also targeted.

Among the stolen items was a gold chain weighing nearly 1 bhori, valued at approximately 2.5 lakh taka, which was forcibly taken from Hamida Begum. Alarmingly, Rina Begum was subjected to an attempted sexual assault during the incident, heightening concerns over the brutality of the attack.

Local residents rushed to assist the victims, transporting them to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital for immediate medical attention. Following the incident, Golam Rasul lodged a written complaint with the Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, prompting an investigation into the assailants and the alleged extortion network operating in the area. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and strengthen security.
