As the festive rush ahead of Eid intensified at the Paturia Ferry Terminal in Manikganj, instances of extortion targeting commuters and vehicle operators have reportedly risen. Responding to this growing concern, Shibaloy Police conducted a targeted operation on Thursday, 19 March, apprehending two young men in the act of collecting illegal fees from auto-CNG drivers.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Syamon Munsi (19) and Sourav Munsi (19), both residents of the Teghuri area within the upazila. Syamon is the son of Habil Munsi, while Sourav is the son of Montaz Munsi. Police sources revealed that the duo were demanding between 100 and 200 taka from each vehicle operating at the terminal.
According to the police, the surge in passengers and vehicles as Eid approaches has emboldened such unscrupulous actors. Leading the operation was Sub-Inspector Hasan of Shibaloy Police Station, who successfully intercepted the pair during their extortion attempt.
Shibaloy Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Monir Hossain, emphasised, “No form of extortion or harassment will be tolerated at Paturia Ferry. Following preliminary interrogation, legal proceedings will be initiated, and the accused will be sent to jail through the court.” He further assured that police remain vigilant to safeguard the safety and security of passengers at the terminal.
Local auto-CNG drivers and passengers have welcomed the police intervention, expressing hope that regular operations will significantly reduce extortion and misconduct in the area.
