A journalist came under attack at the Mirpur Intellectuals’ Memorial in Dhaka on Sunday morning in an incident that was captured on video and quickly went viral. The assault, which unfolded in broad daylight, has raised questions about security arrangements at public commemorations.
According to the video evidence, a young man suddenly ran towards the journalist, grabbed their arm, and spun them forcefully before attempting to flee. Police officers immediately intervened, apprehending the individual before he could escape. Reports indicate that members of the public, angered by the attack, tried to confront the assailant physically. Officers managed to prevent further violence, successfully controlling the crowd and ensuring the situation did not escalate further.
At present, there has been no official disclosure regarding the identities of either the journalist or the perpetrator, nor the reasons behind the attack. Authorities have stated that an investigation is underway.
The incident occurred shortly after formal commemorative activities at the memorial. President Md. Sahabuddin and Dr. Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government, visited the memorial early on Sunday. The president laid a wreath at 7:00 a.m., followed twenty minutes later by the chief adviser. The ceremonies were conducted with due solemnity, paying homage to the nation’s martyred intellectuals.
Security analysts observing the attack note a troubling gap between ceremonial planning and on-ground crowd management. They emphasise that safeguarding journalists during public events remains a pressing concern. The episode has prompted calls for heightened vigilance and strengthened security protocols at national memorial sites to prevent similar incidents in the future.
