Police Detain 16 in Tongi Slum Raids

In a concerted operation aimed at curbing crime, law enforcement authorities in Tongi, Gazipur, have arrested 16 individuals suspected of involvement in robbery and drug trafficking. The raids, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, 12 March, also led to the seizure of homemade weapons from several residences.

The Tongi East Police Station spearheaded the operation, targeting the Ershadnagar and Bankfield slum areas. Officers conducted systematic searches across multiple homes, detaining residents suspected of criminal activity.

Superintendent of Police (OC) Mehedi Hasan explained that the operation was a response to long-standing reports of organised robbery and narcotics dealings in the area. “This action is crucial for restoring law and order and preventing further criminal activity. Our police team remains vigilant, and any illegal activities will be met with stringent legal action,” he said.

During the raids, police recovered a range of locally manufactured firearms, which are now in police custody as evidence. The arrested suspects have been processed under relevant legal statutes and have been presented before the Gazipur court for further proceedings.
