Police Heighten Security in Central Dhaka Amid Protests

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have intensified security measures in key central areas of the capital, including Shahbagh, Kakrail, and the vicinity of Hotel InterContinental. The heightened vigilance comes in the wake of clashes between law enforcement and activists of the Inquilab Mancha on Saturday, 7 February, as authorities sought to maintain public order.

From early morning, a strong police presence was evident at Shahbagh and Kakrail intersections, as well as around Hotel InterContinental and neighbouring streets. Officers were equipped with water cannons to respond promptly to any unrest, though no permanent barricades were installed—indicating a strategy focused on monitoring and control rather than a full closure of thoroughfares.

Observations at the scene revealed lighter-than-usual traffic and fewer pedestrians. While many shops remained partially open, a palpable sense of caution prevailed among residents and passersby. Despite the visible tension, no major disorder was reported throughout the morning.

The unrest stems from the ongoing demand for justice in the murder of Hadi. More than 54 days after the killing, frustration among his family and colleagues continues to escalate. On Friday, 6 February, Inquilab Mancha staged a sit-in at InterContinental and subsequently attempted to march towards the Jamuna area. Law enforcement intervention sparked clashes, involving the use of water cannons, sound grenades, and baton charges, turning parts of the route into a scene of chaos.

Several activists, including Inquilab Mancha’s general secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, were injured and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Later in the afternoon, around 5:00 pm, a procession from the Raju Sculpture reached Shahbagh intersection, obstructing the road and engaging in further confrontation with police.

In a video message from his hospital bed, Abdullah Al Jaber accused authorities of attempting to disrupt the upcoming elections. He reiterated that seeking justice for Hadi is a legitimate demand and stressed that fair judicial action must occur regardless of the election outcome. He also warned that failure to deliver justice could provoke renewed and intensified public protests.

According to DMP sources, the enhanced security measures in these areas will remain in place until further notice, prioritising both peaceful assembly and public safety.

Overall, police preparedness in Dhaka’s key central districts underscores the administration’s challenge: balancing citizens’ right to protest with the imperative of maintaining public order.
