At least 16 members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) sustained injuries on Friday during clashes with protesters across the capital. The confrontations erupted when demonstrators, demanding justice in the Shahid Osman Hadi murder case and the implementation of the ninth national pay scale, attempted to enter areas where public gatherings are strictly prohibited.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali confirmed that personnel from multiple police units were injured in the unrest. Among the injured were an Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG), an Inspector, a Sergeant, and several constables. Most sustained injuries to their hands, legs, and heads, with some treated immediately at the scene. One officer required stitches following a severe head wound.
Commissioner Ali emphasised that the police maintained professionalism and exercised maximum restraint throughout the operation. “At no point were firearms or live ammunition used,” he stated. “All measures were taken solely to uphold law and order and to ensure public safety.”
In a separate statement released later that evening, the DMP reiterated that all gatherings, processions, and demonstrations were prohibited in and around the Jamuna State Guest House. The ban, aimed at protecting public order and the safety of the Chief Adviser, was in place despite which several groups attempted to breach police barricades and advance towards the site. As tensions escalated, officers employed tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowds.
Deputy Police Commissioner of Media and Public Relations, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, also noted that some individuals have been spreading false and misleading information on social media in an attempt to divert attention from the incident. He reassured the public that all police actions were conducted lawfully and without the use of firearms.
The DMP reported that, alongside the police, a few protesters sustained minor injuries. The situation, however, is now fully under control. Authorities urged citizens not to be misled by rumours or misinformation and called for cooperation in maintaining law and order.
Below is a summary of the injured police personnel:
| Rank | Number Injured | Nature of Injuries |
|---|---|---|
| Additional DIG | 1 | Head and multiple body parts |
| Inspector | 1 | Hand and leg |
| Sergeant | 1 | Head |
| Constable | Multiple | Hands, legs, and head |
The DMP has warned that any future attempts to hold gatherings or engage in unlawful activities within restricted areas will be met with strict action. Authorities also encouraged all groups to express their demands peacefully and within the framework of the law.
