Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh – Police have filed a formal case following violent attacks on a police box and an outpost in Chapainawabganj, triggered by public unrest after the deaths of two young men in a road accident. The incident, which involved vandalism, looting, and arson, has led to multiple arrests, with further legal action underway.
The case was lodged on Saturday afternoon at Sadar Model Police Station by Sub-Inspector Shakil Ahmed. Additional Superintendent of Police Wasim Firoz confirmed the development, stating that by Saturday evening, nine individuals had already been arrested in connection with the violence.
According to police officials, investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to identify and apprehend further suspects using CCTV footage and other video evidence collected from the scene. “Based on investigation and analysis of available footage, more arrests will follow,” Wasim Firoz said.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station, Nur-e-Alam, disclosed that the case has been filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The first information report (FIR) names both identified and unidentified suspects, totalling approximately 300 accused individuals. The charges include attacking police installations, vandalism, looting, and setting fire to government property.
The unrest began on Friday afternoon at Circuit House Mor in Chapainawabganj town. Two young men, identified as Rifat Ali and Sohag Ahmed, died in a road accident while allegedly attempting to flee a police checkpoint on a motorcycle. Following the incident, a section of locals accused the police of chasing the motorcycle, claiming the riders lost control as a result.
Angered by the deaths, protesters blocked the road, bringing traffic to a standstill. The situation escalated rapidly, culminating in attacks on a nearby police box and outpost. Protesters reportedly vandalised the facilities, looted equipment, and set parts of the structures ablaze.
Later that night, the situation was brought under control through coordinated operations by the police, the Bangladesh Army, and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). Once protesters dispersed, vehicular movement gradually returned to normal.
Authorities have stressed that while the deaths are under review, violence against law enforcement and public property will not be tolerated. Police have assured residents that due legal process will be followed and urged the public to remain calm.
