Police Officer Found Dead in Pond Near In-Laws’ Home in Gopalganj

A police officer was found dead in a pond beside his in-laws’ home in the Paikakandi area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Monday morning, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased was identified as BM Mahmudul Islam, 38, a resident of Bijoypasha village in Gopalganj Sadar upazila. His father was identified as Haidar Ali Bhuiyan. Mahmudul was serving as an assistant sub-inspector with the 6th Battalion of the Armed Police Battalion, commonly known as APBn.

According to police and local residents, Mahmudul’s body was spotted floating in a pond adjacent to his in-laws’ residence in Paikakandi on the morning of 27 July. Local people noticed the body and informed others in the area, triggering concern and curiosity among residents. Police were subsequently alerted and went to the scene, where they recovered the body from the water.

Following the initial legal procedures, the body was sent to the mortuary of Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The examination is expected to provide important evidence about the nature and possible cause of his death.

Police have detained Mahmudul’s wife and father-in-law for questioning in connection with the incident. Investigators are examining whether either of them has any involvement in the circumstances that led to the officer’s death. However, no conclusion has been reached, and the authorities have stressed that the questioning is part of the ongoing investigation.

The exact circumstances of Mahmudul’s death remain unclear. Investigators are seeking to establish how he ended up in the pond, when he entered the water and what happened in the period immediately before his death. They are also collecting information about his movements, whereabouts and family circumstances before the incident.

As part of the investigation, police have inspected the location where the body was recovered and are examining the surrounding area for any relevant evidence. The circumstances of the death, including the possibility of an accident, drowning or any other cause, will be assessed on the basis of the post-mortem findings and evidence gathered during the investigation.

Mahmudul was reportedly staying at his in-laws’ home for family reasons, although his professional duties were based outside Gopalganj. Investigators are expected to examine his recent activities and movements to establish a clearer timeline of events.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam confirmed the incident. He said the post-mortem examination would help determine the actual cause of death, while police were continuing their investigation to establish whether there was any criminal element behind the incident.

The post-mortem report is likely to be a key part of the investigation. Investigators will also consider physical evidence from the scene, witness statements and other relevant information before deciding on any further legal action.
