A police sub-inspector was injured after being stabbed while attempting to detain suspected robbers during an operation in Tongi, Gazipur. Police have detained two men in connection with the incident.
The incident took place at around 8.30pm on Tuesday in the Sakhinagar area of Sataish in Tongi. The injured officer, Sub-Inspector Hanif Mahmud, is attached to Tongi West Police Station.
According to police sources, officers from Tongi West Police Station launched an operation in the area to apprehend people suspected of involvement in robbery and street theft. During the operation, police attempted to detain two men identified as Shawon and Sagar Mia.
The situation reportedly escalated when the two men resisted the arrest and attacked the police. As officers moved to take them into custody, one of the suspects allegedly used a knife to stab Sub-Inspector Hanif Mahmud in his left leg.
The officer sustained a deep wound in the attack. Despite being injured, he did not withdraw from the operation, according to police.
Hanif Mahmud was initially taken to Gutia International Hospital in Tongi, where he received first aid. He was later referred to the Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital in Dhaka for further treatment.
Police subsequently detained Shawon and Sagar Mia. Investigators are expected to examine their alleged involvement in robbery-related activities and determine whether others were connected to the incident.
The attack occurred during an operation aimed at tackling suspected street criminals in an area where police were conducting efforts to identify and apprehend people allegedly involved in such offences. Officers involved in these operations can face sudden resistance, particularly when suspects attempt to evade arrest.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Rahman said the sub-inspector was injured while trying to apprehend identified suspects involved in robbery. He praised the officer for continuing to carry out his duties despite facing a direct risk to his safety.
The incident has also highlighted the risks faced by police officers during routine law-enforcement operations. Attempts to arrest suspected criminals can quickly turn confrontational, particularly when suspects are armed or attempt to resist detention.
Police are continuing the legal process against the two detained men. Further investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the stabbing and whether the suspects have any wider links to robbery incidents in the area.
