Police Probe Suspicious Death of Housewife in South Keraniganj

Authorities in South Keraniganj are investigating the mysterious death of a 24-year-old woman, Farzana Akter, whose body was recovered from a rented house in the Khejurbag area of Shuivadhya Union. The discovery, made on Saturday night, 18 January 2026, has sparked a manhunt for her husband and in-laws, who have since vanished.

A Medical Visit Turned Tragic

Farzana, the eldest daughter of Dulal Hawlader from Jhalokathi district, had moved to the capital just ten days ago. She had travelled to Dhaka alongside her husband, Rifat, specifically to seek medical treatment. The couple was residing in a rented flat in the Tiles Mosque Lane of Khejurbag, sharing the space with Rifat’s father, Abul Kalam, and his brother, Sobuj.

Chilling Final Words

The victim’s mother, Maksuda Begum, provided a distressing testimony that has shifted the focus of the investigation toward Farzana’s brother-in-law. She revealed that she had been speaking to her daughter on the phone just moments before the tragedy.

“Farzana told me that Sobuj had just entered the room,” Maksuda recounted. “She disconnected the call shortly after that. Little did I know that would be the last time I would hear her voice.”

Following this final conversation, Farzana was found dead. Her relatives have since raised formal allegations, suggesting that Sobuj, possibly with the complicity of the other men in the house, was involved in her death.

Law Enforcement Response

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of South Keraniganj Police Station, Saiful Islam, confirmed that the police were alerted on Saturday night. While the husband initially claimed he discovered the body upon returning from his workplace, his subsequent flight—along with his father and brother—has cast a heavy shadow of doubt on his version of events.

Police have completed the initial inquest report and sent the body to the Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) morgue for a post-mortem examination. Detectives are currently tracing the mobile locations of the three absconding men, as their disappearance is being treated as a strong indicator of culpability.
