Political Clash Between BNP-Jamat Erupts in Chapainawabganj

A tense political confrontation occurred on Sunday evening in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila, highlighting growing electoral friction in the district. Both the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami have accused each other of instigating violence during the incident, which took place in the Menipara area and involved allegations of vehicle collisions, torn banners, and physical assault.

The BNP’s parliamentary candidate, Harunur Rashid, was at the centre of the controversy. According to Rashid, he was travelling in a microbus at approximately 7:30 pm as part of his election campaign when he encountered a Jamaat-e-Islami procession. Despite halting the vehicle to allow the marchers to pass, participants reportedly jostled the microbus and tore campaign banners affixed to it. Rashid stated, “Being inside the vehicle became almost impossible. Most of the people pushing the bus appeared to be adolescents, many of whom are not even eligible voters.”

During the confrontation, Rashid’s son, Rubaiyat Ibne Harun Rafi, reportedly intervened by exiting the vehicle and attempting to remove the marchers while lodging a protest. Rashid attributed the incident to what he described as “politically uncivilised and provocative behaviour.”

Conversely, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Chapainawabganj district branch issued a joint statement alleging that Rubaiyat attacked their district leader, Azizul Haque Noor. The statement warned that such demonstrations of brute force in the electoral arena could severely damage the political climate and called for the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of Rubaiyat and his associates. In protest, the party organised a demonstration later the same evening.

Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Md. Noore Alam, confirmed that no formal complaints had been filed by either party as of now, and assured that legal action would be taken if any official reports were submitted.

The table below summarises the main allegations from both parties:

Local voters are reportedly concerned, and discussions are intensifying regarding the responsibilities of political leaders in maintaining order and decorum during the election period.
