The district of Raozan has been plunged into a state of heightened anxiety following the cold-blooded execution of a senior opposition youth leader on Monday night. Muhammad Jane Alam Sikdar, a 48-year-old influential member of the Raozan Upazila Jubo Dal, was ambushed and fatally wounded by a trio of masked gunmen in his home village of Sikdar Para. The professional nature of the strike has particularly alarmed the local populace, occurring a mere 500 metres from the East Gujra police investigation centre. This proximity to law enforcement suggests a chilling level of boldness by the perpetrators, who managed to strike and vanish before authorities could react.
According to witness statements gathered from the Alimiahart area, the attack unfolded at approximately 8:30 PM. Mr Sikdar, who previously held the significant post of General Secretary for the East Gujra Union Jubo Dal, was walking back to his residence after an evening at the local market. When he was approximately 200 metres from his front door, a motorcycle carrying three masked individuals pulled alongside him. The assailants discharged multiple rounds at close range, striking him in the chest and torso. As the sound of gunfire tore through the night air, the gunmen accelerated away, leaving the victim bleeding heavily on the pavement.
Terrified residents rushed to the scene and transported Mr Sikdar to the Upazila Health Complex. Due to the critical nature of his injuries, he was redirected to a private hospital in the heart of Chattogram city, where he was tragically declared dead upon arrival. Politically, the deceased was a staunch loyalist of the BNP Vice Chairman, Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury, who is currently one of two primary BNP candidates for the Chattogram-6 constituency. His death marks a grim milestone in what has become an increasingly bloody period for the region.
Since the seismic political shifts of August 2024, Raozan has transformed into a focal point for partisan warfare. Official records and local media reports indicate that 17 homicides have occurred in the upazila during this short window, with 12 being directly attributed to political motives. Perhaps most concerning is the fact that 10 of these fatalities resulted from internecine conflicts within the BNP itself, as rival factions struggle for local dominance. With over 350 individuals suffering gunshot wounds in recent months, the assassination of Mr Sikdar underscores a persistent cycle of violence that the authorities have yet to contain.
