Prime Minister to Launch Dinajpur Canal Project

The Prime Minister, Tarek Rahman, will inaugurate the excavation of the Balrampur Sahapara canal in Kaharol Upazila, Dinajpur, on 16 March. The project, extending over approximately 12.5 kilometres, forms part of the government’s nationwide programme to restore rivers, canals, and reservoirs, addressing chronic water management and irrigation challenges.

Minister of Water Resources Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie confirmed the Prime Minister’s visit during a site inspection on Sunday. Speaking to reporters, he highlighted the benefits the local population would gain from the canal restoration, particularly in terms of flood control and agricultural productivity.

“This initiative is aimed at easing waterlogging and ensuring that farmers have a reliable water source for irrigation. Once completed, the canal will help boost crop yields and benefit the broader community,” Minister Annie said.

He noted that many of the nation’s canals and rivers had suffered from prolonged neglect, with sediment accumulation, unplanned construction, and commercial encroachments obstructing natural water flow. The Balrampur Sahapara canal, in particular, had faced such challenges, impeding drainage and causing recurring local flooding.

The minister emphasised the importance of collaboration with local residents to overcome these obstacles. “We seek the support of the community to ensure the canal is restored efficiently. Collective cooperation will allow this project to bring maximum benefits to the people,” he added.

Transparency and accountability are central to the initiative. Minister Annie reassured that the project would be implemented under strict oversight, preventing corruption and ensuring that the work serves public interest.
