Prince Mahmud Joins New Film Certification Board

The Government of Bangladesh has recently reconstituted the Bangladesh Film Certification Board, marking a significant step in modernising the country’s film regulatory framework. In an official notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the names of the 15-member board were formally announced.

Initially, the committee had included film director Khizir Hayat Khan and film editor Iqbal Ehsanul Kabir, both of whom later stepped down citing personal reasons. Their vacancies have now been filled by lyricist, composer, and music director Prince Mahmud and film director-producer Rafiqul Anwar Rasel, bringing a blend of creative and production expertise to the board.

The Ministry’s notification also outlined the leadership structure of the newly constituted board. The Chairman will be the Senior Secretary or Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, while the Member Secretary role is assigned to the Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Censor Board.

Composition of the Reconstituted Board

The new board brings together representatives from government ministries, official institutions, and key figures from the film industry. Prominent members include Prince Mahmud, Rafiqul Anwar Rasel, Kazi Naushaba Ahmed, and Tasmiya Afrin. Their collective experience spans creative arts, film production, policy, and regulatory affairs.

Historical Context

The reconstitution follows a period of inactivity for the previous Bangladesh Film Censor Board, which became largely defunct after political transitions. In a move to ensure greater transparency, accountability, and adherence to international standards, the government first established the Bangladesh Film Certification Board on 22 September 2024. The new board represents a shift from restrictive censorship towards a more nuanced age-based classification system, aligning with global practices in film regulation.

Significance of Prince Mahmud’s Appointment

Prince Mahmud, a household name in Bangladeshi music and songwriting, is expected to bring a creative perspective to the board’s deliberations. By integrating musical and artistic insight alongside cinematic expertise, the board aims to balance artistic freedom with social responsibility.

Film industry insiders have expressed optimism that the reconstituted board, with its diverse membership and renewed mandate, will provide a more effective, professional, and culturally sensitive certification process, ultimately benefiting filmmakers and audiences alike.
