Purbachal Road Crash Claims Lives of Three Young Friends

Three friends have died after their motorcycle collided head-on with a lorry on the 300-foot road in Purbachal, Rupganj, in Narayanganj district. Two of them were killed at the scene on Thursday night, 22 October, while the third died in hospital on Friday morning, 23 October.

The accident occurred at around 9pm near Bhuinyabari Bridge in the Sulpina area of Rupganj upazila. The victims were aged 15, 16 and 19. The incident has left their families grieving and renewed concerns about road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

The deceased were identified as Rudra Mia, 16, Yamin, 15, and Shrabon Mia, 19.

Rudra was the son of Akhtar Mia, a resident of Dighirpar in Alampur village, under Rupganj Union. He was a Year 10 pupil at Abdul Haque Bhuiyan International School. Yamin, the son of Kamal Hossain, lived in the Beilartak area of Dakshinbag and studied in Year 9 at Baghber Ideal High School.

Their friend Shrabon was the son of Zillur Rahman, who lives in the Badda area of Dhaka. Having passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination that year, Shrabon was studying in Year 11 at a college in the capital. He had been visiting his paternal aunt’s home in the Baghber CD Market area of Rupganj.

According to police and local sources, the three friends set out on an unregistered motorcycle on Thursday afternoon to explore the Purbachal area. At one point, they were travelling against the direction of traffic along a service lane to the west of Bhuinyabari Bridge when their motorcycle collided head-on with a lorry heading towards Kanchan.

The impact killed Rudra and Yamin at the scene. Shrabon sustained serious injuries and was rescued before being taken to Ashiyan Medical College Hospital for treatment. Despite receiving medical care, he died at around 11am on Friday.

The lorry fled the scene following the collision, and its identity remains unknown. Police are now trying to establish which vehicle was involved and locate its driver.

Sub-Inspector Mahmudur Rahman of Kanchan Highway Police said the bodies had been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examinations. He confirmed that the lorry had left the scene after the accident.

AHM Salauddin, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station, said efforts were under way to identify the lorry and its driver and take them into custody.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation. Police will need to establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision and determine the responsibility of those involved. The reported use of an unregistered motorcycle and travel against the direction of traffic are among the details relevant to understanding how the accident occurred.

The deaths of the three friends have once again drawn attention to the risks associated with unsafe road use. Following traffic signs, travelling in the designated direction and ensuring that vehicles meet registration requirements are important measures for reducing road hazards. Establishing the facts of this case will also be essential to ensuring accountability.

For the families of Rudra, Yamin and Shrabon, the loss is profound. What began as an outing among friends ended in the deaths of three young people whose education and futures lay ahead of them.
