Putin Calls for Diplomacy to End Iran Conflict

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for an immediate halt to hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, urging all parties to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

On Saturday, 7 March, President Putin spoke via telephone with Iranian President Masoud Pagehskian. During the conversation, Putin expressed condolences over the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In turn, President Pagehskian briefed the Russian leader on the latest developments regarding military tensions in Iran.

Following the call, the Kremlin released a statement emphasising Russia’s position: “Russia urgently calls for the cessation of all violence in Iran. We reaffirm that the resolution of regional issues, including in the Middle East, must proceed through political and diplomatic channels rather than military force.” The statement also noted that President Putin maintains ongoing communication with both Iran and Gulf countries and expressed full solidarity with Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and national dignity.

Escalation Timeline

The current conflict escalated after nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, conducted from 6–27 February, ended without an agreement. On 28 February, the United States launched Operation Epic Fury, followed simultaneously by Israel initiating Operation Roaring Lion. In response, Iran has carried out repeated drone and missile strikes on Israeli targets and U.S. military bases in the Middle East. Reports indicate that Russia is providing intelligence support to Iran during these operations.
