Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered a sharp warning to Europe just before engaging in significant talks with United States envoys regarding a peace agreement focused on Ukraine. He stated that if Europe chooses to initiate a war, Russia is ready immediately.
Putin made these comments on Tuesday, 2 December, in Moscow, ahead of his meeting with American delegates.
He asserted that the modifications Kyiv and European nations want to introduce to the US-backed draft peace accord are unacceptable to Moscow. According to him, these proposals are not compatible with the actual situation.
After the discussions, a five-hour meeting took place between Putin and senior envoys representing US President Donald Trump. Despite the lengthy session, no substantial progress was achieved.
The Kremlin’s spokesperson reported that the talks were constructive, but Russia still rejects several aspects of the peace proposal. The US delegation, which included Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, did not issue any statement following the meeting.
On the Russian side, Putin’s aides Kirill Dmitriev and Yuri Ushakov were present.
Ushakov later explained that, although there was mutual understanding on some issues, many critical points remain unresolved. The most significant disagreements concern the demand for Russia to withdraw from occupied Ukrainian regions and the proposal that Europe provide security guarantees.
Before the meeting, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky commented that the chance to end the conflict is greater now than ever. However, he insisted that any peace settlement must include firm security guarantees and ensure the path to NATO membership—conditions that Russia firmly opposes.
