Recently appointed as Bangladesh’s national spin bowling coach, Mohammad Rafique has indicated that his responsibilities will extend well beyond the art of spin. The former left-arm spinner has expressed his intention to contribute across multiple departments, including batting, fielding, and high-catching drills, depending on the team’s requirements.
Speaking to the media, Rafique emphasised that his coaching approach will not be restricted to a single discipline. Instead, he aims to adopt a holistic role within the national setup, working closely with players to refine their overall cricketing skills.
He stated that if the batting coach seeks assistance, he would be willing to offer technical advice to batters as well. According to him, modern cricket demands versatility from coaching staff, and every opportunity to support player development across departments should be utilised. Rafique underlined that he plans to observe training sessions broadly, ensuring he remains involved in all aspects of preparation rather than focusing narrowly on spin bowling alone.
Rafique also highlighted his working relationship with former teammate and current assistant coach Mohammad Ashraful. Having shared the dressing room during their playing careers, he believes this long-standing familiarity will enhance coordination and communication within the coaching staff. He suggested that collaboration between coaches, regardless of departmental boundaries, will ultimately benefit the players and strengthen the team environment.
He further noted that players often seek guidance from multiple coaches depending on their needs. As an example, he referred to left-handed batter Soumya Sarkar, explaining that players frequently approach different members of the coaching staff to refine specific technical areas. Rafique believes such an open-door coaching culture is essential for modern high-performance cricket.
Despite his enthusiasm, Rafique acknowledged that the role comes with significant pressure. He admitted that expectations are high and that his position depends on delivering measurable improvement in player performance. He stressed that coaching at the international level is inherently challenging and requires continuous adaptation, precision, and accountability.
He added that success would depend on a balanced understanding between what the players need and what the coaching staff aims to implement.
