Rajshahi University Imposes Severe Sanctions on Staff and Students Over Allegations

Rajshahi University has imposed strict disciplinary measures against three of its faculty members and five students following a series of allegations of misconduct. The university’s Public Relations office, headed by Professor Dr Akhtar Hossain Majumdar, officially confirmed these actions on 3 December. The 544th Syndicate meeting, held a day earlier, authorised the measures, which are effective immediately.

Associate Professor Dr Anik Krishna Karmakar, from the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, has been suspended for three years and barred from any examination responsibilities for the next decade. Professor Dr Prabhash Kumar Karmakar of the Statistics Department and Associate Professor Mohammad Hedayet Ullah from the Finance Department have also been suspended, pending a final decision on permanent dismissal based on the findings of an investigative committee.

Among the student body, two students had their enrolment revoked, one was permanently expelled, and two were suspended for one year. These measures were triggered by serious allegations, including unethical relationships and evidence of extortion.

On 11 May, Associate Professor Hedayet Ullah was implicated in unethical conduct with a female student from the 2018–19 Finance cohort, leading to her permanent expulsion. Evidence of extortion implicated two additional students, Sirajul Islam Sumon and Nazmus Sakib, who were also permanently expelled, with all academic certificates annulled. Former anti-discrimination student movement coordinators Ataullah and Sajjad Hossain Sajib were suspended for one year due to their involvement.

Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Moha. Main Uddin emphasised that all measures, including the suspension of Dr Anik Krishna Karmakar, were executed following the Syndicate’s approval. The university asserts that these actions reinforce its zero-tolerance policy against misconduct and serve to maintain ethical standards across all levels of academic life.
