Rampage Triggered by False Announcement, Suspect Snatched from Police Custody

In a scene more akin to a dramatic thriller than a standard police operation, a violent mob in Jashore’s Keshabpur Upazila laid siege to a police unit on Wednesday night. The orchestrators used a local mosque’s loudspeaker to incite a riot, successfully—albeit briefly—snatching a convicted felon from legal custody.

The Midnight Ambush

The incident unfolded in Hijaldinga village, within the Bidyanandakati Union, during the early hours of Wednesday, 1 April. A team from the Keshabpur Police Station had successfully tracked down and apprehended Jehangir Alam, a fugitive with convictions in three separate criminal cases.

However, as the officers prepared to transport the convict, the situation took a sinister turn. In a calculated effort to obstruct justice, false claims were broadcast over the mosque’s megaphone, erroneously shouting that the police were “beating the suspect to death.”

The impact was instantaneous. Within minutes, a frenzied crowd of 50 to 60 individuals, armed with bamboo poles and blunt instruments, descended upon the small police contingent. Taking advantage of the chaos, the mob physically overpowered the officers and fled with the handcuffed convict into the darkness.

Casualties and Injuries

The ferocity of the assault left three officers wounded. Sub-Inspector (SI) Asmat Ali and Constables Shahidul Islam and Habibullah bore the brunt of the attack. While most received first aid, Constable Shahidul Islam’s injuries were severe enough to require admission to the Upazila Health Complex, where he remains under medical supervision.

“The attackers showed a total disregard for the law,” stated Shahidul Islam, OC (Investigation) of Keshabpur Police Station. “The suspect even self-inflicted a head injury during the initial arrest to create a spectacle and further incense the gathering crowd.”

The Recapture

The triumph of the mob was short-lived. Following the escape, senior police officials coordinated a massive manhunt across district lines. By midday on Thursday, 2 April, Jehangir Alam was cornered and re-arrested in the Ghosra Beel area, a marshy borderland between Keshabpur (Jashore) and Dumuria (Khulna).

The local authorities have confirmed that a fresh case is being filed against the instigators of the riot. Police are currently identifying the individuals who used the religious institution’s broadcasting system to facilitate the escape, vowing that those who “politicised a routine arrest” will face the full weight of British-inherited penal codes still prevalent in the region’s judicial framework.
