A tragic incident in Ramu upazila of Cox’s Bazar has left the local community in shock after the body of an elderly man was recovered with his throat slit, following a violent confrontation in the early hours of Monday.

The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Kalu Barua, a long-time resident of the Eastern Merongloa Barua Para area under Fatekharkul Union. Police recovered his body from the scene after receiving information from local residents shortly after dawn. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the victim had sustained fatal injuries to the neck, and he is believed to have died on the spot.

The accused, identified as Tambu Barua, reportedly surrendered to police shortly after the incident while carrying the alleged weapon used in the attack—a sharp knife. Authorities stated that he voluntarily presented himself at Ramu Police Station and was subsequently taken into custody.

According to local accounts, tensions arose on Sunday night amid festive celebrations marking Bengali New Year in the area. The atmosphere, initially joyful, allegedly turned hostile following a verbal altercation between the victim and the accused. Witnesses claim that the dispute escalated rapidly and culminated in a violent attack in front of the victim’s residence along a paved village road. It is alleged that Tambu Barua struck Kalu Barua in the neck with a sharp-edged weapon, resulting in his immediate death.

Family members of the deceased have rejected suggestions of a spontaneous altercation, insisting instead that the killing was premeditated. The victim’s son, Asim Barua, stated that there had been no known prior disputes between the two families, and called for a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.

Police from Ramu Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Md. Sayem, recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Authorities also secured the weapon allegedly used in the attack.

The Officer-in-Charge of Ramu Police Station, Monirul Islam Bhuiyan, confirmed that the accused had admitted involvement during preliminary interrogation. He further noted that initial findings suggest the suspect may have been under the influence of intoxicants at the time of the incident. However, he emphasised that the investigation remains ongoing, and all possible motives—including personal disputes, psychological instability, and substance-induced aggression—are being carefully examined.

The incident has triggered widespread concern among local residents, many of whom have expressed fear and demanded enhanced security measures in the area.
