Authorities in Rangpur have apprehended a fugitive in connection with a notorious double murder case that has drawn widespread attention. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-13) conducted a targeted operation in Fakirpara village, Taraganj upazila, late on Friday night, 13 March, resulting in the arrest of 24-year-old Majidul Islam, a resident of Fakirpara and son of Altaf Hossain.
According to RAB sources, the unit regularly conducts intelligence-led surveillance and operations to prevent serious crimes such as murder, abduction, robbery, and sexual assault across the country. Over recent months, a focused intelligence effort had been underway to locate and apprehend the fugitives involved in the high-profile double homicide registered with Taraganj Police Station.
The operation was launched following a tip-off indicating that Majidul Islam was in his home village. Acting on this information, an RAB team raided his residence late on Friday and took him into custody without incident.
Rangpur RAB Senior Assistant Director and Additional Superintendent of Police, Biplob Kumar Goswami, confirmed the arrest, stating that the organisation had been conducting sustained surveillance to track the suspects in this case. He added that operations targeting violent criminal activity would continue to maintain law and order.
The case originates from an incident on 9 August 2025, when Rup Lal Ravidass (40) and Pradip Lal (45) departed from Gopalpur Charan Baluya area in Mithapukur upazila, returning home by van. Around 8:30 pm, at Burirhat Bot Tola Mor in Taraganj’s 5 No. Siyar Union, local residents became suspicious of the pair and interrogated them. During a search, a foul-smelling beverage found in a bag they carried caused several locals to fall ill, escalating tensions.
The situation deteriorated, and by approximately 9 pm, the victims were taken to Burirhat High School field and brutally beaten with sticks, rods, and other implements, leaving them critically injured. Rup Lal Ravidass was declared dead at Taraganj Upazila Health Complex, while Pradip Lal was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on 10 August.
Following the incident, Rup Lal’s wife filed a murder case under sections 302/34 of the Penal Code against several unnamed individuals, sparking widespread media coverage and public outrage. Law enforcement has been pursuing the suspects with sustained operations since the case was registered.
