The rural serenity of Mujibnagar Upazila in Meherpur was shattered on Tuesday night, 6 January, when the son of a prominent local trader was abducted by a criminal gang. The victim, identified as Mahid Hossain, was reportedly seized at gunpoint, with his captors subsequently issuing a chilling demand for a BDT 30 lakh ransom.
Mahid is the son of Amir Uddin, a well-known pesticide businessman residing in Babupur village within the Mahajanpur Union. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local business community, raising urgent concerns regarding the safety of entrepreneurs and their families in the region.
The Ambush at Komarpur
The abduction unfolded at approximately 9:00 pm. Mahid was returning to his village from the Komarpur market, accompanied by two close friends, Riyad and Junaid. As the trio approached a secluded area near a brick kiln owned by Mshiur Rahman, they were intercepted by a group of unidentified miscreants.
According to the survivors, the attackers blocked their path and forcibly dragged all three youths into a nearby field. In a calculated move, the kidnappers eventually released Riyad and Junaid, but kept Mahid in their custody, disappearing into the darkness of the surrounding countryside.
A Family Under Siege
Shortly after the abduction, the criminals established contact with Mahid’s family. They delivered an ultimatum, stating that the young man would only be released upon the payment of BDT 30 lakh. The family is currently in a state of extreme distress, oscillating between terror and the desperate hope for a safe recovery.
Law Enforcement Response
Upon receiving news of the crime, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mujibnagar Police Station, Jahidul Haque, personally inspected the site near the brick kiln. He held discussions with the two witnesses and the victim’s father to piece together a profile of the assailants.
