The interim government has officially decided to rename the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), one of the country’s premier security forces. Going forward, the organisation will be known as the Special Intervention Force (SIF).
Following a meeting of the law enforcement core committee at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser to the Home Ministry, briefed reporters on the decision. He stated, “A special committee reviewed the matter extensively and submitted its recommendations for the name change. These recommendations have now been approved and will be implemented through a government order shortly. The new name will more clearly reflect the organisation’s mandate, responsibilities, and specialised operational capabilities.”
The decision highlights the historical and operational significance of the organisation. RAB first emerged in the public eye on 26 March 2004, participating in the Independence Day parade. Less than a month later, on 14 April 2004, it undertook its inaugural operational responsibility by providing security during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul. In its early years, the force was primarily engaged in intelligence-gathering and investigative operations. However, by 21 June 2004, RAB had evolved into a fully operational entity, playing a pivotal role in national security, counter-terrorism, anti-human trafficking initiatives, and crime prevention.
The table below summarises the key milestones of the organisation:
| Date | Event | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 26 March 2004 | Public Debut | Participated in Independence Day parade |
| 14 April 2004 | First Operational Deployment | Ensured security during Pohela Boishakh celebrations at Ramna Batamul |
| 21 June 2004 | Full Operational Capacity | Active in intelligence, counter-terrorism, and crime prevention |
| 2004–2026 | Special Operations | Regular interventions against sabotage, smuggling, and narcotics |
Security analysts suggest that the new title, Special Intervention Force, more explicitly conveys the organisation’s focus on rapid-response operations and emergency interventions. They believe the rebranding will enhance public confidence and further strengthen the agency’s effectiveness in maintaining law and order.
All official documentation, identification, websites, and public profiles will be updated to reflect the new name. Government officials emphasise that the rebranding aims to modernise the force, increase transparency, and ensure professional conduct in public service.
RAB has long been regarded as a leading unit within the country’s security apparatus, consistently ensuring stability, discipline, and public safety. Under the banner of the Special Intervention Force, the organisation’s specialised intervention and emergency response programmes are expected to become more efficient and visible, reinforcing its central role in national security.
