Record-Breaking Ticket Demand for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Excitement surrounding ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached unprecedented levels. According to FIFA, the ongoing random selection draw ticketing phase has already set a new record, barely halfway through its scheduled period. Over 15 crore (150 million) applications have been submitted by fans from more than 200 countries, marking a historic surge in global interest.

Preliminary results from the draw, which began on 11 December, indicate that the number of verified personal credit card entries for ticket requests is 30 times higher than the available supply. To put this into perspective, the current demand exceeds the total number of spectators at all 22 previous World Cups (964 matches) by a staggering 3.4 times—a figure almost unimaginable in sporting history.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, in a recent Instagram post, remarked:

“The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest and most inclusive tournament ever. In just fifteen days, over 150 million ticket requests have been received, reflecting an extraordinary 30-fold demand for this edition. This is a true testament to the enthusiasm of fans from over 200 nations.”

He added,

“The overwhelming response demonstrates the global love for football. In North America, we are set to make history, uniting fans from across the globe in a unique celebration of football and togetherness.”

The random selection draw will remain open until 13 January, giving every applicant an equal chance to secure tickets. Once this phase concludes, another draw will ensure fairness for all fans. Unsuccessful applicants will have further opportunities in subsequent sales phases to purchase additional tickets.

Ticket prices for the World Cup, which kicks off on 11 June 2026, have sparked debate. Infantino defended the pricing strategy, citing the “incredible” global demand. The tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has faced scrutiny, particularly as group stage tickets are up to three times costlier than those for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The cheapest tickets for the final in New Jersey are priced at £3,119, but FIFA insists that demand far exceeds supply. Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, Infantino noted:

“We had six to seven million tickets available for sale. In just fifteen days, we received 150 million requests—about one crore requests per day. It shows the sheer power of the World Cup.”

For context, over nearly a century of World Cup history, FIFA has sold around 44 million tickets, yet the recent response surpasses this by a magnitude equivalent to 300 years of World Cup sales.
