Bangladesh batsman Towhid Hridoy has dedicated the vehicle he received as a post-series award to his mother, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Hridoy was adjudged the ‘Most Valuable Cricketer’ following the conclusion of the One Day International (ODI) series against Australia. For his performances on the field, he was rewarded with a red car manufactured by the automotive brand Chery.
Following the conclusion of the series, the cricketer published a photograph of himself with the prize on social media. In the accompanying text, Hridoy noted that he had recently formed an intention to purchase a car for his mother, a plan that materialised unexpectedly through his sporting achievement.
“Mother, I had intended to buy a car for you, and within a few days, I received one! Isn’t it strange?” Hridoy stated.
Early Financial Constraints and Mother’s Support
Hridoy’s professional cricket career was established through significant personal sacrifices made by his mother. During his childhood, he desired to travel to Dhaka to enrol in a competitive cricket academy. However, his family faced severe financial difficulties and lacked the disposable income required to pay for his athletic training and accommodation.
Recognising her son’s dedication, Hridoy’s mother decided to mortgage her family’s remaining plot of land to raise the entry fees. This financial arrangement was completed without the initial knowledge of Hridoy’s father. Upon moving to the capital, Hridoy was defrauded by a fraudulent cricket academy located in the Bonosree neighbourhood. The financial loss and subsequent distress led him to consider retiring from cricket entirely, though he ultimately chose to return to the sport out of respect for his mother’s sacrifices.
Care Obligations and Public Open Letter
Hridoy’s career decisions have remained closely linked to his mother’s well-being. On one occasion, he chose to absent himself from a senior national team training camp to remain beside his mother in the hospital during a critical phase of her medical treatment, an action that led to varied speculative reports in the sports media.
A few years prior, an open letter written by Hridoy addressed to his mother became a subject of discussion among cricket followers. The document detailed his emotional reaction to her initial medical diagnosis and her ongoing battle with the illness.
“My mother, I first received the news of your cancer on my birthday,” Hridoy recorded in his open letter. “That day, I realised for the first time that I need you, even in exchange for the entire world. After that, the entire journey of your suffering was before my eyes. I have lost count of how many tears I shed looking at your sleeping face.
I wiped those tears myself so that you would not wake up and see my wet eyes. You fought against cancer, and I constantly fought against the fear of losing you. But I gained all of this strength by watching you, mother. By watching you, I learned how much a woman has to sacrifice, how hard a mother has to work, and how honest a woman must be. You are my finest educational institution.”
