Jewel Hasan Saddam, a leader of a proscribed student organisation in Bagerhat, returned home from prison five days after the tragic deaths of his wife and nine-month-old son. Upon arriving at his residence on Wednesday night, Saddam immediately visited the graves of his wife and child, accompanied by his father-in-law Ruhul Amin Howlader, brother-in-law Shahnewaz Amin Shuvo, and other local residents. Overcome with grief, he touched the soil of the graves and wept openly, leading prayers for the souls of his loved ones.
Saddam, visibly distraught, told reporters, “I am a bereft husband and a grieving father. I could not hold my child in my arms. Oh Allah, forgive my wife and child. If my wife was murdered, I demand a proper investigation and justice.”
Later, at his in-laws’ home, he elaborated, “When I was imprisoned in Jessore, my wife may have thought I would never return. I strongly believe my wife and child were killed deliberately. I seek a thorough and transparent investigation.” He added, “I had applied for bail multiple times without success. I could not hold my son, and yet I was granted bail at the cost of their lives.”
Saddam, the son of Ekram Howlader and Delowara Ekram of Sabekdanga in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, serves as the president of the Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League. He was released from Jessore Central Jail at around 2 pm on Wednesday, following the High Court’s order granting him six months’ bail on Monday.
The tragic deaths occurred on 23 January when the bodies of Saddam’s 22-year-old wife, Kaniz Subarna (also known as Swarnali), and their infant son, Sejad Hasan Nazif, were discovered at their Sabekdanga home. After post-mortem examinations at Bagerhat District Hospital, the bodies were taken to the wife’s parental home, then later to Jessore Central Jail for Saddam’s final viewing. The funeral prayers were held at the local Eidgah field, and the mother and child were buried in the family graveyard.
