Rumin Farhana won by a large margin

In a commanding electoral performance, independent candidate Rumin Farhana has emerged victorious in the Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, which includes Sarail, Ashuganj, and parts of Bijoynagar. Contesting under the duck symbol, Farhana secured a margin of 37,568 votes over her closest rival, underlining a strong mandate from the electorate.

According to unofficial results released late on Thursday, 12 February, by Assistant Returning Officer Abu Bakar Sarkar, Farhana amassed a total of 117,495 votes across all 151 polling stations, comfortably surpassing Maulana Junaid Al Habib, the candidate of the BNP alliance, who contested with the date palm (khejur gachh) symbol and received 79,927 votes.

The voter turnout in Brahmanbaria-2 was 44.8 per cent, out of a total registered electorate of 499,448.

Despite generally peaceful voting, minor incidents were reported during polling. At one centre, a brief scuffle broke out between the supporters of two candidates, prompting a five-minute suspension of voting. Tensions also arose at two other centres during candidate inspections.

Tragically, early in the morning at Syed Sirajul Islam Milonayoton polling station in Kacharipara, Polling Officer Md. Mujahidul Islam (48) of booth number 2 collapsed and later died despite medical efforts after being rushed to the Upazila Health Complex.

A total of nine candidates had initially filed nominations, though only eight remained in the contest, following the withdrawal of former Jatiya Party MP Ziaul Haque Mridha last Sunday. Ultimately, the election primarily saw a contest between independent Rumin Farhana and BNP’s Maulana Junaid Al Habib, reflecting a two-way race in this strategic constituency.

The result signals a significant shift in local political dynamics, with Farhana’s emphatic margin demonstrating strong grassroots support. Observers note that her victory could influence broader regional political calculations ahead of upcoming national elections.
