The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has finalised its 15-member roster for the maiden SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship, set to ignite in Bangkok on 13th January. In a decision that has captivated domestic sports fans, the legendary Sabina Khatun has been handed the captain’s armband, marking a significant return to national leadership.
Sabina’s appointment follows a period of notable absence from the senior football team, largely attributed to a tactical and personal impasse with the British head coach, Peter Butler. Rather than retreating from the international stage, Sabina transitioned her immense technical skill to the futsal court, undergoing an intensive period of specialist training. Her successful reintegration is bolstered by the appointment of the Japanese-born forward Sumaya Matsushima as vice-captain, forming a leadership duo that combines veteran savvy with modern dynamism.
Tactical Shift: From Pitch to Court
The squad represents a deliberate blend of the “Golden Generation” that secured the 2022 SAFF Women’s Championship and returning veterans. Figures such as Masura Parvin and Krishna Rani Sarkar bring essential big-match temperament to the indoor game. Furthermore, the inclusion of Mishrat Jahan Moushumi and Marzia signals a desire for experienced ball-handlers who can navigate the tight spaces and rapid transitions inherent to futsal.
The selection process was rigorous, resulting in the exclusion of promising talents Unnoti Khatun, Nasrin Akter, and Sejuti Islam Smriti from the final travelling party. For those selected, the challenge is significant; while many are seasoned footballers, the last time a Bangladeshi women’s side competed internationally in futsal was the 2018 Asian Cup qualifiers.

This tournament serves as a crucial litmus test for the BFF’s efforts to diversify women’s sports in Bangladesh. The squad is rounded out by Lipi Akter, Mehenur Akter, Ratri Moni, Sumi Khatun, Naushin Jahan, and Swapna Akter July. As they prepare to face South Asian rivals in the Thai capital, the focus will be on whether Sabina’s leadership can once again galvanise a team that has historically punched above its weight on the regional stage.
