Sabrina Carpenter Blends Film and Pop at Coachella

Sabrina Carpenter delivered a lavish, cinematic headline performance at Coachella 2026, reimagining the desert stage as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Old Hollywood glamour, complete with A-list cameos, surreal comedy interludes, and blockbuster-scale production design.

Closing the first weekend of the California festival on 10 April, Carpenter’s set marked the fulfilment of a promise she had teased two years earlier, when she jokingly referenced a future headline slot during her 2024 Coachella “Nonsense” outro.

The show began with a monochrome film sequence depicting Carpenter speeding across the desert in a high-end vintage automobile. The narrative quickly shifted into parody as she was stopped by a highway patrol officer portrayed by actor Sam Elliott, setting the tone for an evening that blurred the line between concert, film, and theatre.

Upon arrival at the main stage, Carpenter emerged into a Hollywood-inspired fantasy world. A Walk of Fame-style runway extended into the crowd, leading towards a sprawling set dressed with faux rock formations echoing the Hollywood Hills. Above it all, a glowing “Sabrinawood” sign anchored the concept.

She opened with House Tour, before moving through Taste and Busy Woman, with choreography punctuated by absurdist visuals, including dancers dressed as poodles being paraded across the stage. The performance leaned heavily into satire of celebrity culture while maintaining polished pop spectacle.

A series of guest appearances elevated the narrative. Susan Sarandon appeared in a staged vehicle monologue reflecting on fame and the entertainment industry, briefly shifting the tone into reflective drama. Will Ferrell later entered as a frustrated electrician attempting to repair a supposed lighting failure mid-show, adding comedic disruption to the tightly scripted production. Carpenter’s Girl Meets World co-star Corey Fogelmanis also appeared as a waiter, while Samuel L. Jackson provided a pre-recorded “spiritual guide” narration woven throughout the set.

The second half of the performance intensified in scale. Carpenter introduced audience participation segments, inviting thousands of fans to illuminate the desert with phone torches, transforming the venue into a sea of light. In another set piece, she was elevated above the crowd while artificial rainfall descended over the stage, heightening the cinematic atmosphere.

The production formed part of a broader Coachella 2026 weekend that continues to generate industry attention. Jack White was added to the bill at short notice for weekend one, while Lambrini Girls were reportedly removed from the line-up. Festival discussions were also stirred after headliner Karol G revealed she had been cautioned against using the phrase “ICE out” on stage due to possible immigration-related repercussions.

Elsewhere on the bill, this year’s festival features a wide-ranging roster including The xx, The Strokes, Nine Inch Noize (Nine Inch Nails and Boys Noize), Disclosure, Turnstile, Ethel Cain, Addison Rae, Labrinth, David Byrne, Interpol, Alex G, BIGBANG, Laufey, Iggy Pop, FKA Twigs and Wet Leg.

Carpenter’s set further cements her rapid rise in global pop culture, following the breakout success of Espresso, which propelled her into the upper tier of contemporary pop headliners and established her reputation for combining theatrical flair with chart dominance.
