The cricketing world in Dhaka has been abuzz since Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar arrived in the city last Sunday, ahead of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Announced on social media on 11 December, his visit has been eagerly awaited by fans, particularly as he joins the Dhaka Capitals as their official mentor. Known as the “Rawalpindi Express,” Akhtar still holds the record for the fastest delivery in international cricket and is revered for his fiery pace and aggressive on-field presence.
Speaking at a press conference at a hotel in Banani, Dhaka, Akhtar shared his love for Bangladesh and reflected on his illustrious career. As expected, discussions largely revolved around his legendary bowling spells, favourite deliveries, current fast-bowling techniques, and his most cherished cricketing memories.
During his 14-year international career, Akhtar played 46 Tests, taking 178 wickets; 163 One Day Internationals, claiming 247 wickets; and 15 T20 Internationals, with 19 wickets to his name. When asked about his three favourite wickets, he highlighted the batsmen who have left an indelible mark on his career. “Personally, I consider three of the greatest players of all time—Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, and Sachin Tendulkar,” he said.
On a lighter note, Akhtar joked about his favourite deliveries. “My three favourite deliveries? Getting Sachin first ball, hitting Brian Lara on the shoulder, and hitting Gary Kirsten in the chest—just kidding!” he laughed. “Seriously, my top three are: dismissing Sachin Tendulkar and Adam Gilchrist in Colombo in 2002 with yorkers, and sending Jacques Kallis back in a very fast delivery in my third or fourth Test.”
Akhtar also spoke about the thrill of fast bowling. Asked whether hitting the helmet or taking five wickets is more enjoyable, he said, “Any fast bowler should enjoy their bowling. Long run-up, flowing hair, open shirt… enjoy every moment. Every delivery is an event. Make sure the crowd has a great show. At the same time, your goal is to take wickets, not to hurt anyone.” He added that he regrets occasions when batsmen were injured by his deliveries.
When comparing his era with the current generation, Akhtar noted, “I can’t blame them; they are born into the T20 era, travel constantly, and play matches day after day. The fastest deliveries need proper preparation and rest. With six months of training, one can bowl at top speed, but such aggression is missing in today’s game.”
