Scaloni’s view on Argentina’s World Cup squad selection

Speculation surrounding Argentina’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has intensified in recent weeks, fuelled by reports in local media and widespread discussion on social platforms suggesting that the defending champions have already settled on a provisional list of 26 players. However, head coach Lionel Scaloni has been keen to temper such claims, making it clear that the selection process remains far from complete and that no final decisions have yet been taken.

Speaking in his first interview of the year at the Argentine Football Association (AFA) studio, Scaloni offered a measured and transparent insight into his thinking. While acknowledging that long-term planning is unavoidable at this stage, he firmly rejected the notion that the squad is close to being finalised. According to the World Cup–winning coach, Argentina currently has a pool of roughly 50 players under serious consideration, many of whom are separated by only marginal differences in quality and suitability.

“Our list includes about 50 players with very similar levels,” Scaloni explained. “Any of them could earn a place. Injuries and dips in form are factors we monitor closely, and in those areas we make no compromises.”

The decision to maintain such a broad preliminary list is rooted in recent experience. Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Argentina were forced into late changes after several players suffered injuries close to the tournament. Scaloni is determined not to repeat that scenario. By keeping options open across all positions, the coaching staff aim to ensure depth, balance and flexibility right up until the final squad submission.

Argentina’s triumph in Qatar has also shaped the current selection debate. Many members of the 2022 squad remain central to Scaloni’s plans, not out of sentimentality, but because of sustained performance levels. “Most of them are at an ideal age,” he noted. “Since winning the World Cup, they have done nothing to justify being excluded. Age is less important than what a player delivers on the pitch.”

Inevitably, any discussion of Argentina’s World Cup prospects turns to Lionel Messi. The 38-year-old captain has previously expressed a desire to play in 2026 but has stopped short of making a firm commitment. Scaloni recently met Messi in Spain, though he stressed that no pressure has been applied. “We did not discuss the World Cup,” Scaloni said. “There is still time, and his decision must be respected.”

The 2026 World Cup will begin on 11 June across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Argentina have been drawn in Group J, alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan, and will open their campaign against Algeria on 16 June in Kansas City. Scaloni expects a demanding group phase, followed by even sterner tests in the knockout rounds.

Argentina’s Group J Opponents :

TeamKey Characteristics
AlgeriaPhysically strong, tactically disciplined, experienced coach
AustriaAggressive high-pressing style, strong qualifying form
JordanLess familiar opponent, impressive recent development

As preparations continue, Scaloni’s message is one of caution and balance. Argentina’s strength lies not only in individual brilliance, but in competition for places—an approach designed to give the reigning champions their best chance of defending the world title on football’s biggest stage.
