Schoolboy Stabbed in Kamrangirchar, One Arrested

A shocking case of school-related violence has left a fifth-grade student seriously injured in Kamrangirchar, a neighbourhood in Dhaka. The incident occurred on Friday evening, 19 December, around 7 pm in the 7th Lane of the East Rasulpur area, police reported. The accused has been identified as Saiful Islam Sagar, 19, who reportedly attends school in the same locality.

According to police sources, the victim, Roman, aged 15, was socialising with friends in the lane when Sagar suddenly approached him. A dispute reportedly arose over issues of “seniority” and Roman’s choice to socialise in another lane. The argument quickly escalated, culminating in Sagar attacking Roman with a knife. Roman sustained multiple stab wounds, including to his abdomen, right hand, left wrist, and other parts of his body.

Kamrangirchar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Golam Faruk, stated that in a desperate attempt to protect his abdomen, Roman clutched his stomach with both hands, only for Sagar to stab him in the back. Following the attack, Sagar fled the scene. Roman was initially taken to Kamrangirchar Health Complex by his family. However, due to worsening condition, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where surgery was performed to remove the knife from his back. On the night of 20 December, Roman’s condition deteriorated further, prompting doctors to advise immediate admission to the ICU. He was subsequently moved to a private hospital in Malibagh for intensive care.

OC Golam Faruk confirmed that Roman’s father, Jalal Fakir, filed a formal complaint at the police station. Acting swiftly, law enforcement launched an operation and apprehended Saiful Islam Sagar. Police revealed that Sagar is a fifth-grade student at Sunlight Kindergarten School in Kamrangirchar and that his father works as a rickshaw puller.

OC Faruk expressed deep concern over the rising trend of school-related violence, stating, “Such incidents are alarming for both society and educational institutions. Parents and teachers must take a proactive role in instilling mutual respect and tolerance among students.”

Local residents echoed these concerns, warning that minor disputes among students can rapidly escalate into serious violence. They urged heightened vigilance and educational interventions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
