In an unexpected turn of events, Scotland has been granted the opportunity to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup, following Bangladesh’s withdrawal due to security concerns in India. The International Cricket Council (ICC) extended the invitation after lengthy deliberations, offering Scotland a place in the prestigious tournament. Yesterday, Cricket Scotland announced its squad for the competition, while CEO Trudi Lindblade conveyed heartfelt sympathy towards the Bangladesh team.
Scotland has been slotted into Group C, replacing Bangladesh, for matches scheduled in India and Sri Lanka. With their opening fixture set for 7 February, the team has undergone a hectic final phase of preparations to ensure they are ready for the global stage. Despite the suddenness of the opportunity, Lindblade expressed confidence in the team’s readiness.
Asked about their feelings towards Bangladesh, Lindblade remarked, “We absolutely have sympathy for the Bangladesh team. Clearly, this is not how we would have chosen to reach the World Cup. There is a normal qualification process, and no one wants to be invited in this manner. We fully acknowledge that our participation comes under exceptional circumstances, and we genuinely feel for the Bangladeshi players.”
Addressing potential criticism over Scotland’s “backdoor” entry, she added, “I would not use those words. People are entitled to their opinions. We know we have been invited to participate. We are the 14th-ranked team in the world and a strong, consistent side throughout the year.” She also highlighted that the team’s performance in the World Cup qualifiers did not fully reflect their usual standard, making their participation both welcome and challenging.
Scotland narrowly missed qualifying for the World Cup last July after defeats to Italy and Jersey in the Europe region final. Now, in Group C, Scotland will face West Indies, Italy, and England in Kolkata, followed by a match against Nepal in Mumbai. The top two teams from the group will advance to the Super 8 stage. Scotland has previously competed in six editions of the T20 World Cup, including the last four tournaments.
