A deadly three-vehicle accident took place on the Satkhira–Khulna highway in Bhairabnagar on Tuesday, claiming the lives of a mother and her son. The crash involved a lorry, a passenger Mahindra, and a motorcycle, resulting in at least six additional people sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred near the Bhairabnagar junction under the jurisdiction of Patkelghata police.
The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Sharmin and her 12-year-old son Mostakin from Shankhra village in Satkhira Sadar, were pronounced dead at the scene due to the collision’s severity. Eyewitnesses report that the Mahindra carrying passengers collided with a lorry and a motorcycle almost simultaneously, resulting in the catastrophic outcome. Local residents immediately assisted the injured, transporting them to nearby hospitals for critical care.
Patkelghata Thana’s Officer-in-Charge, Lutful Kabir, stated that the police are carrying out a full investigation and appropriate legal measures are underway. “We are analysing all factors, including driver behaviour, road conditions, and vehicle speeds,” he confirmed.
Road safety experts suggest that multi-vehicle collisions such as this are often exacerbated by traffic congestion, inadequate signage, and the presence of vehicles with diverse weights and speeds in close proximity. The Bhairabnagar area, in particular, is a high-risk zone due to its status as a key junction on the highway.
Community members have raised concerns about the lack of effective traffic management, demanding stricter enforcement of road rules and improvement of infrastructure. “Without proper measures, such tragedies are bound to recur,” said local residents.
This devastating incident underlines the urgent need for stronger road safety policies and public awareness initiatives. Authorities have pledged to take the necessary steps to prevent similar accidents, emphasising both legal accountability and improved road management strategies.
