Serjis Alam, chief organiser of the Northern wing of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has declared that the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh will remain closed until the killers of Sharif Osman Hadi are returned from India. He made the statement in a Facebook post late on Thursday night, 18 December, addressing the country’s interim government.
In his post, Serjis wrote, “Interim government, until the killers of our martyred brother Hadi are handed over by India, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh will remain closed. Now or Never. We are in a war!” The post has since gone viral, drawing significant attention from political observers and social media users across the country.
The announcement comes following the tragic death of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inkilab Manch, who had been receiving treatment in Singapore. His verified Facebook page confirmed the news late on Thursday, stating, “Almighty Allah has accepted the great revolutionary Osman Hadi as a martyr in the fight against Indian imperialism.” The Inkilab Manch also confirmed the news on its official Facebook page, mourning his passing and honouring his revolutionary work.
Hadi had been shot by unidentified assailants on 12 December while campaigning as an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency. The attack occurred on Box Culvert Road in Purana Paltan, Dhaka, where the assailants fired at him from a moving motorcycle while he was in a rickshaw. Two shooters approached close enough to fire at Hadi at point-blank range before fleeing the scene.
He was rushed to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition. Doctors later confirmed that bullets had entered the right side of his head and exited through the left, with fragments remaining lodged in his brain. At the family’s request, Hadi was subsequently transferred to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka for further treatment. On 15 December, he was airlifted via air ambulance to Singapore for advanced medical care, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Hadi’s death has triggered nationwide outrage, with supporters and political groups demanding accountability and swift action to bring his killers to justice. Serjis Alam’s call to suspend operations at the Indian High Commission underscores the deep political and emotional impact of the incident, highlighting tensions over cross-border justice and national sovereignty.
